COM 250 / Week 9 Discussion: Social Position and Rhetoric Strategies
Consider a recent issue of public conflict such as immigration reform or health care access or any other issue which you are familiar. Explain how social position impacts those who speak on that issue.
After every significant school shooting, an issue comes up that is debated by many. That issue is gun control. It is an even bigger debate when the president is a democrat. The reason for this is that when it does come up, it gets blown up by pro-gun control presidents. If the president is pushing for gun control, more people get on the pro-gun control side, while if the president is against it, people don't worry about it as bad. Another way that social position impacts the gun control topic is when it comes to the victims of the school shooting. The Sandy Hook Elementry shooting made this topic worse than many other shootings because the victims were little kids. If you have a crime, people think its bad, when you have a crime that involves little kids, people have a cow and get vocal. It gets even worse the younger the kids.
