MA 260 / Week Three Discussion: How Does Radio Contribute to the Ethos of American Culture?
How has American
society, our political participation, our business, and our culture, benefited
from the boom of radio communication in the 1920s-1950s?
During the 1920's the level of public information was limited. Newspapers, letter and telegraphs were the best tools for mass communication. The introduction of radio increased public awareness in America. Radio spread the word of popular culture, uniting America. Through radio, our government could send messages to all citizens with in a few minutes. Radio created the first web of information spreading across the world. Political figures could send their words across the states, insuring a true unaltered message.
But the radio also created a limited resource for the spread of information. Business use radio to advertise products. Advertisements now rule the airwaves, forcing money to be the deciding factor on what words will be said on air.
