COM 111 / Week #3: I got a question

  1. You had mentioned that a good conscience will keep a human from acting like an animal.
I read the news or watch people in public and can't help but wish more people did act like animals. It would be a step up. I can't think of a single species of animal that is as barbaric as man.

  2. There is no bad conscience. Conscience could be dead if we ignore it for too long. Whenever conscience is awake, it lead us to be a good human being.

The difference between human being and animal is we human beings know we have a conscience and, if we act on our conscience, we become a good human being; If we ignore our conscience and let it go rotten and dead, we become worse than animal. Yes, I agree with you that some human beings are more barbaric than animals.
Animal also has compassion and conscience (gentle heart.) But they don't know they have it. Some animals, such as penguin, could be very gentle and compassionate to their fellow creatures. But they are not aware of their conscience. So, their compassion stay as animal instinct.
The modern media and modern government promote free will. The result is that more human beings ignore their conscience and let it go rotten-dead.

    1. Thank you for expanding on this thought. I do understand and agree much more clearly with what you are saying now. It leads me to wonder though, because of the difference in conscience between animals and humans, does karma effect animals too? Or since they aren't consciously aware of right and wrong like we are, it doesn't seem fair to me that they would accrue karmic repercussions. Am I right in assuming this? Thanks for letting me sneak in another question, I promise it'll be my last one :)
