MA 260 / Week #4: I got a question

  1. Question-Back in my home town, our local cable service (CableOne) is in negotiations with Time Warner Cable to see what cable channels to keep and which to get rid of. This has been a problem for my mother because one of the only channels she really watches is on the chopping block (Turner Classic Movies). So as she looks into satellite providers such as DirecTV or Dish Network to switch to, so my question is it better to stick with her basic cable service and continue to pay about 60 dollars a month or is worth it in the long run to have satellite service?

  2. I honestly don't have a dependable answer to the choice between Direct TV/Dish Network vs. Cable One. It appears that Dish Network could be cheaper than Cable One. But I do share your observation about cable and DBS operator determine what we watch because they only care about squeezing out more from their line-up. They negotiate a deal with cable network and program providers and then go back to use that the squeeze some profit from subscribers. The operation use their package to make money, they don't help us to save money. But I believe the thing could be changed soon. With iTV on the way, eventually consumer can choose to only watch the channel they like and sign off all the unnecessary channels.

  3. Question: I originally joined the social media giant facebook to keep in touch with friends as I grew up and moved away from home. As I grew I realized that the world we lived in now suddenly became revolved around facebook and friendships became dependent on instant messaging. That if I wanted to talk to my friends they insisted I message them or "poke" them.I noticed kids as young as 8 were getting iPhones and joining facebook so they could keep in contact with their parents when they went to a friends house. My question is, is our upcoming generations of kids becoming deprived, "brain washed", and too dependent by upcoming technology and are parents not being responsible by letting their 8 year olds join socially corrupt networks?

  4. I like the word "socially corrupt networks" very much!
Technology company invented this gadget with zero concern for its effect on human mind, the same as drug grower has zero concern for human body. The problem is that APPLE use very skillful PR and advertisement to position their gadget as a communication media for democracy, community, and empowerment, and people bought that crap!
    Time to wake up.
