COM 250 / Week #8 Discussion: Why Is Communication the Lifeblood of Groupwork?
Most
of the time, the essence of teamwork is excellence in communication. Groups make bad
decisions and crash in problem-solving largely due to defective communication: information overload, unstructured or over-rigid discussion, defensive
listening, confirmation bias, dichotomous thinking, collective inferential
error, group polarization, social loafing, groupthink… just to name a few. Do you
have any experiences with communication failure in your groupwork? Tell us your
story.

Being on a sports team since I was four I know the importance of having good communication skills. Because in my opinion, you learn the most about group work and working with all types of people within the stressful environment of sports. You have to deal with all types of people and all types of communication skills in order for the team or group to operate effectively. The sport I play, volleyball, is one of the most communication based sports. With lack of communication the team cant win or achieve great things. Personal feelings like getting upset with other teammates due to a lack of communication in a play can turn into defensive communication. Players who aren't mature will turn to the silent treatment to the whole team just because of one player not communicating in an a way that they like. Defensive listening also comes into play when there is tension between the coach and players. I know from this past year of playing, players who often disagree with the coach's decisions with cause the team to turn against them in a matter that can affect communication drastically. It's important to be open minded to all types of communication skills and learn how to deal with all problems that can arise because if one group member or teammate is having defective communication it will ultimately effect the teams cohesiveness and ability to work together.
