COM 325 / Week Four Discussion: Why Is History Our "Religion"?

Our textbook cites several reasons for a people to know its history so the people can know "who they are" and "where they ought to go." History is a divine narrative of the people since its "genesis."  History lets people know that they have a special purpose on this planet. In a sense, history is our god, our religion, and our destiny. Tell us how your study of American history, such as the concept of "manifest destiny," relates to your identity, values, and worldview.

  1. I would say my study of American history relates to my worldview in everything I believe in really. In school, they teach you about the history of America, the wars, the depression, and the eras our country has gone through. That’s what we believe in, that’s what we as American’s know and trust in. It’s our cushion, it makes me feel good thinking that it could all be true (not that I don’t think it didn’t happen). My values are entrusted within knowing the history of our country, knowing that everything we are and have today is here because history made it that way. History is what made our country, it’s everything we believe in, and everything we know about our country. I believe that is what fuels my values and worldviews of the study of our American history. History is our religion because it is something that we can believe in without seeing.

  2. Manifest destiny was America's excuse for taking land. I view my history a little differently as I grew up in two different cultures of the United States. The first culture was the predominant white-Anglo Saxon culture. The second culture was Alaska Native. My mother's first husband was native and he passed away prior to my brother being born. Growing up, we had two cultures in the household that reflected my mother's new family but also the past. My brother was involved in many native activities and as a by product, so was I. I started to understand the history of Alaska Natives. They saw what happened to the American Indians and how land was taken due to manifest destiny. When Alaska became a state, the different tribes of Alaskan Natives formed corporations and still retained their lands. Because of history, they learned lessons which then shaped how Alaska was culturally structured. Alaska Native cultures are everywhere and are intertwined within the dominant culture of Alaska. My worldview is completely different because I am used to co-cultures and not seeing separations of people.

  3. Why is history or Religion?
History lets people know that they have a special purpose on this planet. That is our “God” that is letting us know what our special purpose is. I am not one for going to religion details, because I don’t believe in only “God” who brought me in to this world. I do go to church occasionally, I do pray almost every night. A part of me is I don’t know what my reasoning is for being on this planet. I know I heal others really well, because I am in the medical field. I love everyone that comes in to my life, I give people advice when needed, I let others cry on my shoulders as I have cried on others too, I have brought a child in to this world, who is my number one still to this day. I just don’t feel like I am completed yet, maybe I will when God has informed me of my reasoning for being on this planet.
