COM 325 / Week Two Discussion: Culture and Mythology

Each culture has its mythology. They even borrow from each other a little. Yet each culture makes some extraordinary claims about how their culture is exceptional and superior to other  cultures. How do folktales, legends, and myths “teach” culture? Do you agree with "American Exceptionalism"?

  1. Folktales, legends and myths definitely teach culture, which is in turn art that we learn from as a part of history. I do not think one culture is better or superior than another. The messages that are given through any of these are interchangeable and is and could be open to interpretation by the presented and receiver. Myths, legends, and folktales explain issues of our existence of where we came from, why we are here, and how we can account for things in our world. They teach us of customs, beliefs, and traditions of their past. I believe those that agree with "American Exceptionalism" are misguided thinking the US advocated every idea is wrong.
