COM 250 / Week 7 Discussion: Romantic Partner and Friendship Partner: We Need Both?

What is the similarity between our romantic partner and our friendship partner?  Why is it that we need both marriage and friendship as in “I Love You, Man”?  Have you ever realized that the two relationships actually can enrich and reinforce each other rather than being always in an either-or type conflict?

  1. Men and Women are very different. While we need a romantic partner, we also need someone else that shares more interests with us. Typically, your not going to find a romantic partner with all of the same interests as you. Two common example interests are sports and shopping. Having a bestfriend can fill in those interest holes. Another benefit of having a non-romantic friend is that they can be a sound board for any problems with your romantic partner. This can also work the other way. No matter how close you and your friend or romantic partner are, there will still be problems and a need for someone else to talk to. With this second person to talk to, relationships can last longer and be stronger.
