COM 325 / Week #7 Discussion: How did I enact and establish my cultural identity in a globalized society?
Describe your communicative activities for establishing and enacting your cultural identity. For me, I follow the lunar calendar to celebrate Chinese New Year and celebrate my Chinese heritage. I reject fast food and rock music... how about you?
Before this class I really hadn't given a lot of thought about my identity or my cultural identity for that matter. However, now looking at my past and comparing it today, I'm not sure a lot has changed. I celebrate that traditional American holidays, such as Christmas, 4th of July, and Easter. Some also religious holidays. I enjoy my American activities very much for example watching football, listening to country music, and going out to eat a lot. These are things I grew up doing and 22 years later continue to do them. These are the things that I do for enacting my cultural identity.
For establishing and enacting my cultural identity of being an American, I listen to rock music but the rock that is now categorized as "soft rock" such as Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith all of those bands. I eat hamburgers and french fries, watch football much to my dismay, BBQ food during the summers, celebrate 4th of July, have games nights with my family. That may not be American, but that is part of my culture anyways. I go to church, and I drive a Ford Taurus, an American made car. I feel these are things that are part of my cultural identity and will always be a part of my identity.
