  1. The impact of the growth of book superstores on the rest of the bookstore industry was devastating for small business but reinvigorating for the industry, that is until the rise of online and e-book sales. Book superstores are able to carry hundreds of thousands of titles where-as smaller stores cannot carry even half as many titles. Superstores also are able to carry more copies of a book because they are able to return unsold copies to the publisher, while ensuring that popular books do not sell out. Smaller book stores usually must buy with more apprehension. The number of independent bookstores dropped by over half in the last 10 years, however many superstores have now gone bankrupt due to online sales and e-books, with the exception of Barnes and Noble which now dominates bookstore sales and has introduced their own e-book reader as well as online book purchasing, which has helped keep Barnes and Noble viable in the book market.
